HURRICANE

The hurricane cocktail is a New Orleans classic. Most people assume this cocktail was named after the vicious storms that berate the Gulf Coast year after year. However, the answer may surprise you

The hurricane cocktail inception occurred during World War II. Whiskey was the most popular drink of the land, but during wartime, it became increasingly harder to get. Rum however, was flowing like the Mississippi! As a result, liquor distributors would force

their alcohol sellers to add the less popular rum to their whiskey order since whiskey was in such high demand!

Pat Obrien’s legendary bar in NOLA was the first to get creative with all the leftover rum from their whiskey orders. There was so much excess rum that he decided to put a minimum of four shots in each cocktail to move the liquor more quickly. After a hefty pouring of rum, he added a little passionfruit juice for sweetness, and created the delicious and fruity cocktail we know today.

So why the name hurricane? In the 1940s, hurricanes would pelt the gulf coast relentlessly, but most establishments still relied on candlelight. People commonly used hurricane lamps to protect their candle’s flame from being snuffed out by vicious hurricane winds. Hurricane lamps were round and voluminous on the bottom and tall and skinny at the top to prevent wind from reaching the flame. When Pat O’Brian’s rum cocktail made its debut, the only glass that could fit the excessive rum was a hurricane lamp. So Pat O’Brian started referring to this potent cocktail as a hurricane! Although we don’t see many hurricane lamps these days, the hurricane cocktail glass lives on.
